Katja Strunz (project room)

Almine Rech Gallery is pleased to announce the second exhibition of German artist Katja Strunz in its Brussels gallery.

Strunz’s sculptural practice, seeped in history, finds its roots in the constructivists and avant-gardes. For this presentation the artist has installed a monumental sculptural relief that was exhibited in the São Paolo Biennale this past fall entitled Zeittraum #10, which the artist has been working on since 2003. The piece is situated within her iconic series of folded works, relates to both notions of time and space and is rendered out of wood and metal. While elegant in their construction, the sculptures also retain a handmade aspect, revealing their aging over time. The exhibition will also include a group of collages, which relate to the artist’s sculptural practice and a solitary steel relief sculpture.

Strunz was born in 1970 in Ottweiler, Germany, she lives and works in Berlin. She was recently awarded the Vatenfall Contemporary 2013 and will be the subject of an exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie opening April 24th. A catalog will be published on the occasion.

Her work is included in numerous public and private collections including the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Boros Collection, Berlin.

Almine Rech Gallery is trots u de tweede tentoonstelling van de Duitse kunstenares Katja Strunz in haar vestiging in Brussel te kunnen aankondigen.

De wortels van Strunz’ sculpturen zijn te zoeken in allerlei vormen van constructivisme en avant-garde die zich in de kunstgeschiedenis hebben voorgedaan. Dit keer installeert ze Zeittraum #10,het monumentale sculpturale reliëf waaraan ze begon te werken in 2003 en dat in de voorbije herfst werd tentoongesteld op de Biënnale van São Paolo. Het maakt deel uit van haar iconische reeks geplooide werken, verwijst naar de begrippen ‘tijd’ en ‘ruimte’ en bestaat uit hout en metaal. De elegant geconstrueerde sculpturen zien er ook uit alsof ze met de hand waren gemaakt, want het is duidelijk dat ze met de tijd verouderen. Op de tentoonstelling is verder nog een alleenstaande reliëfsculptuur te zien, naast een groep collages die verband houden met haar sculpturale werk.

Katja Strunz, in 1970 geboren in het Duitse Ottweiler, woont en werkt in Berlijn. Dit jaar was ze de prijswinnaar van de Vattenfall Contemporary. Op 24 april opent in de Berlinische Galerie een tentoonstelling met werk van haar en daar hoort een catalogus bij. Haar werk is verspreid over tal van openbare en privéverzamelingen, onder meer het Centre Pompidou in Parijs en de Sammlung Boros in Berlijn.
