The Wall: Roby Dwi Antono

Roby Dwi Antono’s art is a window opening onto the fantastical visions of childhood. The artist’s world oscillates between graphic art, especially illustrations for children, and science fiction. Antono is inspired by themes from pop culture and employs macabre humor to highlight the contradictions of the human experience.

With his exhibition The Wall, the Indonesian painter Roby Dwi Antono invites us into his very personal and raw inner world, which is enveloped in what looks like a bodily cavity. What is the source of this feeling of familiarity, of re-cognition, upon viewing an artwork that is deeply dream-like and personal? First and foremost, it stems from our experience of being a child, with a new, magnetic gaze embodied in a series of youthful, almost human faces.

The artist's fascination with the cycle of growth and emergence resonates in Seed of Life, his series of works on paper, and Lunar Ritual, paintings that play along the borders of a membranous environment.  

Roby Dwi Antono constantly questions the living and lived experience, producing hybrid or monstrous creatures bursting with Joy & Sorrow, to quote the title of one of his artworks. Creating a deceptively sweet, childlike atmosphere, Roby’s dolls, with their horrifically empty stares, give us a sensation of troubling strangeness caused by something that feels very close but is nevertheless unknown.  
Roby subtly steps across centuries: from the most personal to the most universal, he recreates the world of Hieronymus Bosch and his Garden of Earthly Delights, staging the conflicts of the human experience, which is torn between animality and humanity, suffering and pleasure, good and evil. 

Closer to our own time, Roby Dwi Antono’s work is rooted in Max Ernst’s surrealism or the Pop surrealism of Mark Ryden. Roby finds his inspiration in the great picture book of childhood, with its monsters and its disturbing creatures and dolls. These surrealist creations that once lived only in Dwi Antono’s imagination come to life once again in this exhibition.

Chaque œuvre de Roby Dwi Antono est une fenêtre ouverte sur les visions fantasmagoriques de l’enfance. L’univers de l’artiste oscille entre art graphique, notamment entre illustrations pour enfants et science-fiction. Antono s'inspire des thèmes de la culture pop et fait usage d’un humour macabre pour mettre en lumière les contradictions de l'expérience humaine.

Au travers de ses oeuvres exposées pour The Wall, le peintre indonésien Roby Dwi Antono nous convoque dans son univers intérieur le plus intime et le plus cru, enveloppé dans ce qui ressemble à une cavité charnelle. D'où vient cette sensation de familiarité de re-connaissance devant une œuvre profondément onirique et personnelle ? En premier lieu de notre expérience d’être enfant, au regard neuf et magnétique incarné dans une série de visages juvéniles, presque humains.

La fascination de l’artiste pour le cycle de croissance et d’éclosion résonne dans la série d’oeuvres sur papier Seed of Life comme dans ses toiles Lunar Ritual se jouant aux confins d’un environnement membraniforme. 

Roby Dwi Antono questionne constamment le vivant et son vécu, donnant naissance à des créatures hybrides, monstrueuses d'où jaillissent la joie et le chagrin pour reprendre le titre d'une de ses œuvre. Créant une atmosphère faussement douce et enfantine, les poupées de Roby, celles au regard affreusement fixe, nous donnent la sensation d’inquiétante étrangeté, propre à  quelque chose de très proche et néanmoins inconnu.  

Roby enjambe subtilement les siècles : Du plus intime au plus universel, c'est l'univers de Hieronymus Bosh et son Jardin des délices que Roby recrée, mettant en scène les conflits de l'expérience humaine, déchirée entre bestialité et humanité, souffrance et plaisir, bien et mal. 

Plus proche de nous, c'est dans le surréalisme à la Max Ernst que le travail de Roby Dwi Antono est ancré, ou encore le Pop surréalisme fondé par Mark Ryden. Roby Dwi Antono puise son inspiration dans le grand imagier de l’enfance, monstres, créatures et poupées inquiétantes. Ces créations surréalistes qui ne vivaient autrefois que dans l'imagination de Dwi Antono prennent vie à nouveau dans cette exposition.

De kunst van Roby Dwi Antono is een venster dat uitkijkt op de fantasierijke visioenen van de kindertijd. De wereld van de kunstenaar houdt het midden tussen grafische kunst, met name illustraties voor kinderen, en science fiction. Antono laat zich inspireren door thema’s uit de popcultuur en gebruikt macabere humor om de tegenstrijdigheden van de menselijke ervaring voor het voetlicht te brengen.

Met zijn tentoonstelling The Wall verwelkomt de jonge Indonesische schilder Roby Dwi Antono ons in zijn uiterst persoonlijke en rauwe innerlijke wereld, die omhuld lijkt te zijn door een lichaamsholte. Wat is de bron van dit gevoel van vertrouwdheid, van her-kenning, bij het bekijken van een kunstwerk dat zo diep droomachtig en persoonlijk is? Eerst en bovenal komt dat gevoel voort uit onze ervaring als kind, met een nieuwe, magnetische blik die vorm krijgt in een reeks jeugdige, bijna menselijke gezichten.

De fascinatie van de kunstenaar voor de cyclus van groei en opkomst is voelbaar in Seed of Life, een reeks werken op papier, en Lunar Ritual, schilderijen die zich afspelen langs de randen van een membraanachtige omgeving.  

Roby Dwi Antono stelt voortdurend vragen bij de levende en beleefde ervaring en produceert daarbij hybride of monsterlijke wezens die lijken te barsten van la joie et le chagrin, om de titel van een van zijn kunstwerken te citeren. Roby creëert een bedrieglijk lieflijke en kinderlijke sfeer met zijn poppen, die ons met hun angstaanjagend lege blikken een gevoel van verontrustende vreemdheid geven, veroorzaakt door iets wat heel dichtbij voelt en niettemin onbekend is.

Roby omspant subtiel eeuwen aan kunst: van het meest persoonlijke tot het meest universele herschept hij de wereld van Hiëronymus Bosch en zijn Tuin der Lusten, die de conflicten van de menselijke ervaring ensceneert, verscheurd als die is tussen dierlijkheid en menselijkheid, lijden en genot, goed en kwaad.

Dichterbij onze eigen tijd is het werk van Roby Dwi Antono geworteld in het surrealisme van Max Ernst of het popsurrealisme van Mark Ryden. Roby vindt inspiratie in het prentenboek van de kindertijd, met hun monsters en verontrustende schepsels en poppen. Deze surrealistische creaties, die ooit alleen de verbeelding van Dwi Antono bevolkten, komen opnieuw tot leven in deze tentoonstelling.
