Gregor Hildebrandt Orphische Schatten

Almine Rech Gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition by Gregor Hildebrandt in Brussels. 

Gregor Hildebrandt was inspired for this exhibition by a painting by René Daniëls: “I saw this work only once, when I was an adolescent, through a glass door at Documenta 92”. The picture shows a space in which several paintings appear in white against a dark background. Gregor Hildebrandt sees this project as a tribute to Daniëls. He reinterprets the painting by preserving its dimensions and replacing its bluish-black colour with tape from audio cassettes. These cassettes feature recordings of the Jacques Brel song “La quête” (The quest), taken from the musical comedy Man of La Mancha. “I chose this song because for me Daniëls’ painting evokes traumatic associations: the candle-like painting shines like the star in Brel’s song”. 

Taking this painting as the focal point of the exhibition, Gregor Hildebrandt has transposed its composition to the space of the gallery, thereby creating a mise en abyme. Wrapped in black like the space created by Daniëls, the walls of the gallery are entirely covered in tape from VHS cassettes.  The pictures follow the original composition before gradually distancing themselves from this arrangement as the visitor penetrates further into the installation. The film recorded on the VHS cassette tape covering the walls is Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus. With this reference, Gregor Hildebrandt convokes recurrent elements of his work in the exhibition, such as mirrors, water and reflections. Lyrical and romantic, the film suggests a particular atmosphere and intimates that something always lies beneath the surface. 

For this exhibition Gregor Hildebrandt has also created a large triptych inspired by Paul Celan’s poem “Zähle die Mandeln” (Count the almonds). Its motif is taken from a film by Ute Aurand showing the sound wave of Celan’s voice. The wave reminds the artist of Robert Motherwell’s “Elegy”. Gregor Hildebrandt concludes: “I think another version of the story exists in which, in order to raise his love from among the dead, Orpheus has to sacrifice his voice. The paintings, however, remain silent on this”. 

Gregor Hildebrandt was born in 1974 in Bad Homburg, Germany. He lives and works in Berlin. In 2013 he took part in the group exhibition "Decenter: An Exhibition on the Centenary of the 1913 Armory Show" at the Abrons Arts Center in New York. In 2012 he was the subject of an exhibition with Jorinde Voigt at Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo, Netherlands. He also took part in the exhibition "A House Full of Music" at the Mathildenhöhe Institute in Darmstadt, Germany. In 2013 his work will be featured at the Nuremberg Kunsthaus in Germany and he will participate in a show organised by the Chalet Society on the island of San Servolo during the Venice Biennale.

La Galerie Almine Rech a le plaisir de présenter la seconde exposition personnelle de Gregor Hildebrandt à Bruxelles.

Pour cette exposition, Gregor Hildebrandt s’est laissé guider par une peinture de René Daniëls. "J’ai vu cette œuvre une seule fois, lorsque j’étais adolescent, à travers une porte de verre à la Documenta de 1992". L’œuvre représente un espace dans lequel plusieurs toiles apparaissent en blanc dans l’obscurité. Gregor Hildebrandt conçoit ce projet comme un hommage à Daniëls. Il réinterprète cette peinture en en conservant les dimensions et en remplaçant sa teinte bleue–noire par des bandes de cassettes audio. Celles-ci ont été préalablement enregistrées avec la chanson de Jacques Brel "La quête", extraite de la comédie musicale Don Quichotte "L’homme de la Mancha". “J’ai choisi cette chanson car la peinture de Daniëls m’évoque des associations très traumatiques : la toile en forme de bougie brille comme l’étoile de la chanson de Brel."

Prenant cette peinture comme point central de l’exposition, Gregor Hildebrandt a transposé sa composition à l’espace de la galerie, créant ainsi une mise en abîme. Nimbés de noir à la manière de l’espace créé par Daniëls, les murs de la galerie sont intégralement recouverts de bandes de cassettes VHS. Les toiles suivent la composition d’origine pour s’émanciper au fur et à mesure de l’accrochage. Sur les bandes de cassettes VHS est enregistré le film "Orphée" de Jean Cocteau. Par cette référence, Gregor Hildebrandt convoque dans l’exposition des éléments récurrents de son œuvre, tels que le miroir, l’eau et ses reflets. Le film, emprunt de lyrisme et de romantisme, laisse deviner une atmosphère et suggère le sentiment que derrière la surface, il se dégage autre chose.

Hildebrandt a également réalisé pour cette exposition un large triptyque inspiré d’un poème de Paul Celan "Zähle die Mandeln ". Son motif provient d’un film de Ute Aurand, montrant l’ondulation de la voix de Celan. L’onde rappelle à l’artiste une Élégie de Motherwell. Hildebrandt conclut ainsi : “Je crois qu’il y a aussi une version de l’histoire dans laquelle Orphée ramène d’entre les morts son amour au sacrifice de sa voix. Les toiles sont silencieuses à ce propos.”

Gregor Hildebrandt est né en 1974 à Bad Homburg en Allemagne. Il vit et travaille à Berlin. En 2013, il a participé à l’exposition de groupe “Decenter: An Exhibition on the Centenary of the 1913 Armory Show” au Abrons Art Center à New York. En 2012, il a fait l’objet d’une exposition personnelle avec Jorinde Voigt au musée Van Bommen van Dam à Venlo aux Pays-Bas, et a prit part à l’exposition “A House Full of Music” à l’Institut Mathildenhöhe à Darmstadt en Allemagne. En 2013, il sera exposé au Kunsthaus Nürnberg à Nuremberg en Allemagne  et participera à une exposition organisée par The Chalet Society pendant la Biennale de Venise, sur l’île San Servolo.

Galerie Almine Rech is trots u de tweede solotentoonstelling van Gregor Hildebrandt in Brussel te kunnen voorstellen.

Voor deze tentoonstelling liet Gregor Hildebrandt zich inspireren door een schilderij van René Daniëls. "Ik zag het slechts één keer, op Documenta 92. Ik was toen nog een tiener en moest ervoor dwars door een glazen deur kijken." Op het doek is een ruimte te zien met meerdere witte schilderijen tegen een donkere achtergrond. Gregor Hildebrandt ziet dit project als een eerbetoon aan Daniëls. Hij biedt een nieuwe interpretatie van het werk door het formaat te behouden maar de blauwzwarte tint te vervangen door cassettetapes met opnames van Jacques Brels "La quête" (De zoektocht) uit de musical "De man van La Mancha". "Ik heb dit lied gekozen omdat Daniëls" schilderij bij mij traumatische associaties oproept: het kaarsvormige werk schittert zoals de ster in het lied van Brel."

De hele tentoonstelling is gedacht vanuit dit doek. Niet alleen is het er te zien, de hele galerie wordt ook omgevormd tot een concretisering van deze compositie. Zo ontstaat een Droste-effect. De zwarte achtergrond van Daniëls’ doek roept Hildebrandt op door de muren volledig te bedekken met tapes van VHS-cassettes. De schilderijen beantwoorden aan de oorspronkelijke compositie maar verwijderen zich daarvan naarmate de bezoeker verder in de installatie doordringt. Op de videobanden aan de muren staat Orphée, een film van Jean Cocteau. Voor Hildebrandt is dit een manier om te refereren aan vaak voorkomende elementen uit zijn eigen werk: spiegels, water en weerkaatsingen. Van Cocteaus romantisch-lyrische film gaat een heel aparte sfeer uit: je hebt voortdurend de indruk dat achter de oppervlakte een andere werkelijkheid schuilgaat.

Voor de tentoonstelling maakte Hildebrandt ook een groot drieluik dat is geïnspireerd door Paul Celans gedicht "Zähle die Mandeln" (Tel de amandelen). Het motief is ontleend aan een film van Ute Aurand waarop de geluidsgolven van Celans stem te zien zijn. Die golven doen de kunstenaar denken aan een van Robert Motherwells Elegies. Hildebrandt besluit: "Ik denk dat er nog een andere versie van het verhaal bestaat: om zijn geliefde terug te halen uit het dodenrijk moet Orpheus zijn stem opofferen. De doeken reppen hierover echter met geen woord."

Gregor Hildebrandt, in 1974 geboren in het Duitse Bad Homburg, woont en werkt in Berlijn. In 2013 nam hij deel aan de groepstentoonstelling "Decenter: An exhibition on the Centenary of the 1913 Armory Show" in het Abrons Art Center in New York. In 2012 had hij samen met Jorinde Voigt een tentoonstelling in het Museum Van Bommel van Dam in het Nederlandse Venlo en nam hij deel aan de tentoonstelling "A House Full of Music" in het Institut Mathildenhöhe in het Duitse Darmstadt. In 2013 zal werk van hem te zien zijn in het Kunsthaus Nürnberg in de gelijknamige stad in Duitsland en zal hij tijdens de Biënnale van Venetië deelnemen aan een tentoonstelling op het eiland San Servolo, georganiseerd door de Chalet Society.
