Ugo Rondinone New Horizon

Almine Rech is pleased to present New Horizon, the sixth solo exhibition by Ugo Rondinone at the gallery.

Over the past twenty years, this multimedia Swiss artist has been exploring the figure of the contemporary artist and his relation to the world, but also the relation between the viewer and the artwork, whether the work induces a contemplation, reverie, or meditation.

Constantly moving between the private and the public domain, this opus by Ugo Rondinone reveals the artist’s oscillation between his intimately personal work and the moment when his practice is offered to the appreciation of the public. The iconic “horizon paintings” presented here have not been the subject of a solo show since 1997. They are nevertheless part of a major ongoing project that belongs to the corpus of his “date paintings”. Whether depicting landscapes, mandalas, horizons, windows, stars or brick walls, these paintings, that are neither quite identical nor quite different, are all dated like the pages of a diary, and will terminate with the artist’s life.

“The date paintings began with the landscapes I was doing in the style of 18th-century drawings (…) Language is excluded from them, as is everyday life”. To describe the exhibition, Ugo Rondinone draws on some famous descriptions of solitude in literature. He notably evokes Oblomov, the eponymous hero of Ivan Goncharov’s novel, whose divan becomes the epicentre of his existence, or the intellectual and domestic exile of Paul Valéry’s Monsieur Teste, as well as, of course, such classics as Rousseau’s Reveries of a Solitary Walker and Huysmans’ Against Nature, the starting point of his wanderings. “When I started work on these date paintings, it was out of necessity. I wanted to do something based on my own life, with the least possible social pressure. I work on them so as to isolate myself, as if I were in the woods. It’s an inner monologue, something automatic which prevents me from thinking.”

Next to this, Rondinone will present a series in watercolours of these “horizons”, small intimate pastels summoning a hazy and uncertain future, the very opposite of his brightly coloured paintings, sure of themselves, stretched on fibreglass, and whose rounded edges evoke surfboards. Never before shown outside the studio, biding their time, these preparatory works are not intended for commercialization and will remain the property of the artist. “You can’t let go of everything, some works have to remain private”.

Ugo Rondinone was born in 1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland. He lives and works in New York. His work has been shown in numerous exhibition centres throughout the world, such as Le Consortium in Dijon in 1997, Kunstverein in Stuttgart in 2002, or the Pompidou Centre in 2003. He represented Switzerland at the 52nd Venice Biennale and curated the exhibition The Third Mind at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2007. More recently, his work has been displayed at Kunsthaus Aurgauer in Switzerland in 2010, and at MUSAC in León, Spain in 2011.

Almine Rech est heureuse de présenter la sixième exposition personnelle de Ugo Rondinone à la galerie, intitulée New Horizon.

Cet artiste suisse multimédia explore depuis une vingtaine d’années la figure de l’artiste contemporain, son rapport au monde. Mais aussi la relation entre le spectateur et l’oeuvre, qu’il s’agisse de contemplation, de rêverie ou de méditation.

Décrivant d'incessants trajets entre sphère privée et publique, cet opus d’Ugo Rondinone révèle le mouvement de balancier de l'artiste entre son travail intime et l’instant où sa pratique se livre, mise à l’épreuve du collectif. Les mythiques horizon paintings n'ont pas fait l’objet d’une exposition personnelle depuis 1997. Ils font néanmoins partie d'un projet majeur et ininterrompu appartenant à son corpus de date paintings. Qu’ils représentent paysages, mandalas, horizons, fenêtres, étoiles ou murs de brique, ces tableaux ni tout à fait identiques, ni tout à fait différents ont pour point commun d’être datés comme les pages d’un agenda, et s’achèveront avec l’existence de l’artiste.

“Les date paintings ont commencé avec les paysages que je réalisais à la manière de dessins du XVIIIème siècle [...] Le language en est exclu, tout comme la vie quotidienne.” Afin de caractériser l'exposition, Ugo Rondinone en appelle la littérature et ses célèbres descriptions de la solitude. Il évoque un héros du romancier Ivan Gontcharov, Oblomov, dont le divan devient épicentre de son existence, ou l’exil intellectuel et domestique de Monsieur Teste de Valéry, sans oublier les classiques Rêveries du promeneur solitaire et A Rebours, point de départ de ses déambulations. “Quand j’ai commencé à créer ces date paintings, c’était par nécessité, je voulais faire un travail basé sur ma vie personnelle, avec le moins de pression sociale possible. J'y travaille afin de m’isoler, comme si je me trouvais dans les bois, c’est un monologue intérieur, un travail automatique qui m’empêche de réfléchir.”

En parallèle, Rondinone présente une déclinaison à l’aquarelle de ces “horizons”, de petits formats intimes et pastels évoquant des lendemains brumeux et incertains, aux antipodes de ses peintures aux teintes vives, sûres de leur fait, tendues sur de la fibre de verre, au contours arrondies comme des planches de surfs. Jamais sortis de l'atelier, attendant leur heure, ces travaux préparatoires n’ont pas vocation à être commercialisés et demeureront propriété de l’artiste.   “ On ne peut pas tout laisser partir, certaines oeuvres doivent rester privées".

Ugo Rondinone est né en 1964 à Brunnen en Suisse. Il vit et travaille à New York, aux Etats Unis. Son oeuvre a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions à travers le monde au Consortium de Dijon en 1997, au Kunsteverein de Stuttgart en 2002, au Centre Pompidou en 2003. Il a représenté la Suisse à la 52ème biennale de Venise et fût commissaire d’une exposition au Palais de Tokyo “ The Third Mind”en 2007. Plus récemment, il a exposé au Kunsthaus Aurgauer en Suisse en 2010  et au M.U.S.A.C à Léon en Espagne en 2011.

De Zwitserse multimedia-kunstenaar onderzoekt sinds een 20-tal jaar de figuur van de hedendaagse kunstenaar, zijn verhouding tot de wereld. Maar ook de relatie tussen de toeschouwer en het kunstwerk, onafhankelijk van het feit of die gebaseerd is op contemplatie, dromen of meditatie.

Dit opus, dat onophoudelijke tracjecten tussen de privé en de publieke sfeer beschrijft, legt de evenwichtsoefening van de kunstenaar bloot tussen zijn intiem werk en het moment waarop het werk zich openbaart aan het publiek. De mythische « horizon paintings’ » die hier tentoongesteld worden zijn sinds 1997 niet meer getoond in solotentoonstellingen. Nochtans maken ze deel uit van een groots en ononderbroken project dat deel uitmaakt van zijn corpus van  « date paintings ». Of de kunstwerken landschappen, mandala’s, horizons, vensters, sterren of muren van baksteen voorstellen, deze schilderijen zijn nooit helemaal identiek, noch helemaal verschillend. Als gemeenschappelijke eigenschap zijn ze allemaal gedateerd en hebben ze allemaal een nummer gekregen, zoals de bladzijden in een agenda, en zullen ze zich voltooien met het bestaan van de kunstenaar.

«De date paintings zijn begonnen met de landschappen die ik realiseerde in dezelfde stijl als de tekeningen van de XVIIIe eeuw (…) De taal is eraan ontdaan, evenals het dagelijkse leven .» Teneinde de expositie te karakteriseren evoceert Ugo Rondinone de literatuur en diens bekende beschrijvingen van éénzaamheid. Hij evoceert een held van de romanschrijver Ivan Gontcharov, Oblomov, wiens divan het epicentrum van zijn wereld wordt, of de intellectuele en binnenlandse ballingschap van Monsieur Teste van Valéry. Zonder de klassiekers Rêveries du promeneur solitaire van Rousseau en A Rebours van Huymans te vergeten, die tevens als beginpunt van de omzwervingen  van de kunstenaar fungeerden.  Wanneer ik begonnen ben met de date paintings was het een noodzaak, ik wou een werk maken dat gebaseerd was op mijn persoonlijk leven, met zo weinig mogelijk sociale druk. Ik werk eraan teneinde mezelf te kunnen isoleren, alsof ik me in bossen bevind. Het is een interne monoloog, een automatisch werk dat me verhindert na te denken.

Parallel aan dit werk stelt Rondinone  een serie aquarellen van deze « horizons » voor, kleine intieme pastels die een mistige en onzekere  toekomst evoceren. Een antipode van zijn schilderijen met felle kleuren, zeker van hun stuk, gespannen op glasvezel met afgeronde contouren net zoals surfplanken. Deze voorbereidende werken, die nooit eerder het atelier van de kunstenaar verlaten hebben en die aan het wachten waren op hun moment, hebben niet de intentie gecommercialiseerd te worden en zullen eigendom blijven van de kunstenaar. « Men kan niet alles laten weggaan, sommige werken moeten privé blijven. »

Ugo Rondinone is geboren in 1964 in Brunnen in Zwitersland. Hij werkt en woont in New York.  Zijn werk stond centraal in een groot aantal exposities; het Consortium van Dijon (1997);  Kunstverein Stuttgart (2002); Centre Pompidou (2003). De kunstenaar vertegenwoordige Zwitserland op de 52ste biennale van Venetië en was curator van The third mind (2007) in Palais de Tokyo. Recenter werd zijn werk tentoongesteld in Kunsthaus Aurgauer in Zwitserland (2010) en in het M.U.S.A.C in Léon, Spanje (2011).
