The Wall: Ana Karkar LOVECHILD

Ana Karkar is a French-American artist who has lived and worked in Paris for many years. Viewers will experience her world in her exhibition LOVECHILD at Almine Rech Brussels: The Wall, where she pays tribute to her father, Edward Karkar. This selection of new pieces takes us on a journey through color and symbolism.

Karkar draws some of her references from major works of the Vienna Secession.  In her paintings of nudes, the bodies are twisted and blended in a danse macabre that evokes the work of Egon Schiele, or are joined in passionate freedom, recalling Gustav Klimt’s iconic painting The Kiss.

Karkar’s mastery of gesture is evident in her exploration of the interaction between abstraction and figuration, between humans and hybrid figures. Her work is imbued with color relationships, as expressed by a vibrant palette surrounded with blue that captures the eye of the visitor.

The chiaroscuro in her works evokes cinematographic scenes. Her art is influenced by images in the collective unconscious, especially experimental horror cinema, as expressed by her titles Twin Falls and Skin in the Game. The artist skillfully combines these cinematographic elements with her own artistic language, creating a captivating visual dialogue.

Ana Karkar est une artiste franco-américaine, vivant et travaillant à Paris depuis de nombreuses années. L’univers d'Ana Karkar se dévoile à l’occasion de son exposition LOVECHILD, à Almine Rech Brussels: The Wall où elle rend hommage à son père Edward Karkar. A travers une sélection de nouvelles œuvres, son travail nous entraîne dans un voyage à travers la couleur et le symbolisme.

Karkar puise certaines de ses références dans les œuvres majeures de la Sécession Viennoise. Dans ses peintures de nus, les corps se tordent, se confondent dans une danse macabre à la manière d’Egon Schiele, ou s’unissent avec liberté et passion, comme dans le Baiser clin d’œil universel à Gustav Klimt.

La maîtrise du geste par Karkar est manifeste dans son exploration de l'interaction entre l'abstrait et le figuratif, humain et figures hybrides. Son œuvre est imprégnée d’un jeu sur les couleurs, se traduisant par une palette vibrante, cernée de bleu, capturant l'œil du visiteur.

Les clairs-obscurs de ses œuvres évoquent des scènes cinématographiques. Son travail est influencé par des images présentes dans l'inconscient collectif, et notamment le cinéma expérimental et horrifique, en témoignent les titres des œuvres, Twin falls et Skin in the game. L'artiste fusionne habilement ces éléments cinématographiques avec son propre langage artistique, créant ainsi un dialogue visuel captivant.

Ana Karkar is een Frans-Amerikaanse kunstenares die jarenlang in Parijs woonde en werkte. Bezoekers kunnen haar wereld beleven in haar tentoonstelling LOVECHILD bij Almine Rech Brussel: The Wall, waarin ze eer betoont aan haar vader, Edward Karkar. In deze selectie nieuwe werken neemt ze ons mee voor een reis door kleur en symboliek.

Karkar verwijst een aantal keer naar belangrijke werken in het Weense Secessionsgebouw. In haar naaktschilderijen zijn de lichamen verwrongen en vermengd in een dodendans die doet denken aan het werk van Egon Schiele, of verenigd in passievolle vrijheid zoals in het iconische schilderij The Kiss van Gustav Klimt.

Karkars beheersing van gebaren blijkt duidelijk uit haar verkenning van de interactie tussen abstractie en figuratie, tussen mensen en hybride figuren. Haar werk is doordrenkt met kleurrelaties, zoals uitgedrukt door een levendig, door blauw omgeven palet dat de aandacht van de bezoeker trekt.
