Barbara Kasten Abstracting… Light

Almine Rech Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Barbara Kasten in France in twenty years, “abstracting… light”. With this exhibition she continues the ongoing research residing at the core of her practice since the 1970s: the interplay between light and form. The exhibition will feature recent prints, as well as Polaroids from 1980-1981 and painted photographs from 1979, showing links and lineages between the different periods of her work.

The occurrence of light hitting a plane is distinctive from the recording of the same light thru the lens of a camera.  A unique vision occurs through the optical prism that can be captured and ultimately printed, yet cannot be seen by the naked eye.  As I directed light on various parts of transparent planes and studied it in the back of a view camera, multicolored abrasions activating the surface appeared. The scratches become a color field of drawing over a normally invisible sheet of plastic.  The perception of a ‘thing’, a recordable reality of representation, is basic to the photographic process. In the series “Incidence”, the rendering of light becomes abstract interpretation of surface and form.  However, I do not think of the photograph’s construction in terms of abstraction but as an event.  Many abstract notions are conjured up as we view this unique recording of materiality.  The synthesis of abstract form and our imagination presents a means of seeing the process of lighting. This phenomenon is the subject of my new work and exhibit ‘abstracting…light’.

La galerie Almine Rech a le plaisir d’annoncer la première exposition personnelle de Barbara Kasten en France depuis vingt ans, "abstracting… light". Dans cette exposition, Barbara Kasten développe un thème qui lui est propre et qui traverse sa pratique depuis les années 1970 : l’interaction entre lumière et forme. L’exposition présentera des tirages récents, des Polaroids des années 1980-81 ainsi que des photographies peintes datant de 1979. L'exposition mettra en avant les liens et les filiations entre les différentes périodes de son travail.

L’impact d’une lumière frappant une surface est distincte de l’enregistrement de la même lumière par l’objectif d’un appareil photo. Une vision unique se produit au travers du prisme optique, qu’il est possible de saisir et même d’imprimer, alors qu’elle est invisible à l’œil nu.  Tandis que je dirigeais la lumière sur différentes parties de plans transparents et que je l’étudiais derrière ma chambre photographique, sont apparues des abrasions multicolores qui activaient la surface. Les griffures sur une surface transparente invisible en photo apparaissent comme des champs de couleur dessinés. La perception d’une « chose », une réalité enregistrable de la représentation, est à la base du processus photographique. Dans les séries Incidence, le rendu de la lumière devient une interprétation abstraite de la surface et de la forme. Toutefois, je n’envisage pas la construction de la photographie en termes d’abstraction mais en tant qu’événement. De nombreuses notions abstraites sont convoquées alors que nous visualisons cet enregistrement unique de matérialité. La synthèse entre la forme abstraite et notre imagination est un moyen de voir le processus d’illumination. Ce phénomène est le sujet de mon nouveau travail et de l’exposition "abstracting… light".
