In 2023, MAMAC presented an exhibition dedicated to the artist Thu-Van Tran, marking the artist's first major museum monograph in France following his participation in MAMAC's group show "Cosmogonies, au gré des éléments" in summer 2018.
Thu-Van Tran, a major figure on the French art scene, now enjoys international recognition. In 2017, she distinguished herself with a remarkable installation at the Venice Biennale. In 2018, she was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Prize, and most recently completed a major site-specific commission at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art.
The exhibition highlights key aspects of her work, which explores an artistic universe deeply influenced by her dual Franco-Vietnamese culture. The shared history of the two countries and the visible and invisible heritage inscribed in language and bodies in Vietnam are central elements of her work. She also addresses the lasting transformation of landscapes and the issues raised around the question of life itself. The exhibition weaves together historical narratives and personal mythologies, mixing existing works with new creations.
"The project I'd like to conceive at MAMAC will address the question of our natural and environmental ecosystem, which has become unstable and mutant since the upheavals caused by the economic and political stakes of our modern world. At the same time, we'll be shifting towards poetic considerations: the intrinsic powers of a sovereign, enchanted nature, which transforms itself from a material resource into a spiritual and mystical one, a place of myths and imaginary possibilities. These are necessary for the construction of one's own individual mythology".
