Feeling of Light

The most famous myth about the birth of painting is probably the one told by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History c. 75 AD: the story of Dibutade’s daughter, the young woman who drew the outline of her lover’s shadow in charcoal on the wall of her house before he left for a long journey, capturing his silhouette to give his presence the illusion of eternity. This woman, whose first name Pliny omits to mention, was the first painter in history. Kora of Sicyon—her actual name—created painting as an antidote to absence and disappearance, and invented an art whose necessity has been continually affirmed ever since.

It is to this woman that we owe the invention of representation, the form we give to the impossibility of forgetting. Kora of Sicyon thus made it possible to offer an ultimate attention, a final light to an image before it disappears, this famous “feeling of light” of which the poet and painter Etel Adnan speaks. All the artists, historical and contemporary, gathered and invited by Almine Rech for this exhibition have a shared dedication to that particular light produced by a work of art. This light that allows us to imagine other worlds, spaces and landscapes that are more free, more ambiguous, more daring and fluid than those we know, places where human and non-human beings meet to write new stories and forge new relationships. This light that moves towards the most vulnerable, the most overlooked, the least recognized, to bring them, finally, out of the shadows. A light that lingers on these scenes of contemporary society and captures what it does to us, with its deification of consumption, production, and accumulation. A light that turns to the female body and what is done to it, from its hypersexualization to a possible liberation from archetypes, emphasizing a vision of a powerful woman, in control of her body. Female beauty is here granted the leisure to be distant, indifferent, unusual, and subversive. This freedom can also be expressed through the self-portrait. Many works embrace humor as an emancipatory territory, in which laughter, the grotesque, the caricatural, or the monstrous transform the frameworks of our perceptions.

The subject of innocence as it has been expressed throughout the history of art, and in particular through the motif of the still life, is invoked here and offered new properties, celebrating the power of the beings who inhabit our daily lives, their delicate and so often unnoticed presence. Finally, it is possible that this light lands on a still unknown language, traces whose history has not yet been deciphered. As if our signs and languages ​​weren't convincing enough to express the infinite subtlety of the impressions and emotions that inhabit the living. The exhibition “Feeling of light” illuminates a certain state of our world, constantly expanded and reinvented by the energy of the women who create it, ever since Kora of Sicyon first shed light on it.

Le mythe le plus célèbre qui consacre la naissance de la peinture est probablement celui de Pline l’Ancien, qui relate dans son Histoire Naturelle, circa 75 après JC, le récit de celle qu’il appelle juste “la fille de Dibutade”. Celle-ci a dessiné au charbon l’ombre de son amant sur le mur de sa maison avant qu’il ne parte pour un long périple, capturant ainsi sa silhouette afin de donner à sa présence l’illusion de l’éternité. Cette femme, dont Pline ne donne alors pas même le prénom, serait en fait la première peintre de l’Histoire. Callirrhoé de Sicyone – c’est son nom – a permis de faire de la peinture un antidote à l’absence, à la disparition, et a inventé un art dont la nécessité se trouve aujourd’hui toujours confirmée.

C’est à cette femme que nous devons l’invention de la représentation, la forme qu’on donne à notre impossibilité d’oublier. Callirrhoé de Sicyone a ainsi permis d’offrir une attention ultime, une dernière lumière à une image avant qu’elle ne disparaisse, cette fameuse “sensation de lumière” dont parle la poétesse et peintre Etel Adnan. L’ensemble des artistes, historiques et contemporaines, réunies et invitées par la galerie Almine Rech dans cette exposition ont en partage d’avoir dédié leurs existences à la lumière particulière que produit une œuvre. Cette lumière qui permet parfois d’imaginer d’autres mondes, des espaces et des paysages plus libres, plus fous, plus ambigus, plus audacieux et fluides que ceux que l’on connaît ; des lieux dans lesquels les êtres humains et non-humains se rencontrent pour former de nouvelles histoires et construire d’autres relations. Cette lumière qui se déporte parfois vers les plus vulnérables, les plus oubliés, les moins reconnus, pour qu’enfin ils puissent sortir de l’ombre. Une lumière qui s’attarde sur ces scènes de la société contemporaine, de ce qu’elle fait de nous lorsqu’elle porte la consommation, le produit, et l’accumulation au rang de déités. D’autres faisceaux se tournent vers le corps féminin et ce qu’on lui fait, de sa représentation hypersexualisée à sa possible libération des archétypes, soutenant la vision d’une femme puissante et maitresse de son corps. La beauté féminine se voit ici accorder le loisir d’être distante, indifférente, hors norme et subversive. C’est parfois aussi par l’autoportrait que cette libération s’exprime. Beaucoup des œuvres choisissent l’humour comme un territoire émancipateur, dans lequel le rire, le grotesque, la caricature ou le monstrueux transforment les cadres de nos perceptions. Le sujet de l’innocence, telle qu’elle a pu s’exprimer dans l’histoire de l’art notamment au travers du motif de la nature morte, est ici invoqué pour lui offrir des propriétés nouvelles. La puissance des êtres qui peuplent notre quotidien, leur délicate et si souvent inaperçue présence, se trouve ainsi célébrée. Enfin il arrive que cette lumière s’arrête sur un langage encore inconnu, des traces laissées dont l’histoire n’est pas encore déchiffrée. Comme si les signes et les langues qui sont les nôtres n’étaient pas suffisamment convaincants pour exprimer l’infinie subtilité des impressions et des émotions qui peuplent le vivant. L’exposition "Feeling of light" met en lumière un certain état de notre monde, que l’énergie des femmes qui le composent ne cessent de réinventer, depuis que Callirrhoé de Sicyone s’est mise à l’éclairer.

De beroemdste mythe over het ontstaan van de schilderkunst is waarschijnlijk die van Plinius de Oudere, die in zijn Geschiedenis van de natuur in 74 na Christus het verhaal vertelt van de ‘dochter van Butades’. Zij tekende met houtskool de schaduw van haar minnaar op de muur van haar huis voordat hij vertrok voor een lange reis, om zijn silhouet vast te leggen en zo een illusie van eeuwige aanwezigheid te creëren. Deze vrouw, van wie Plinius de naam niet noemt, zou de eerste vrouwelijke schilder in de geschiedenis zijn. Kora van Sicyon, haar werkelijke naam, gebruikte het schilderen als tegengif voor verdwijning en vond een kunst uit waarvan de noodzakelijkheid tegenwoordig nog steeds voelbaar is. Aan deze vrouw danken we de uitvinding van de afbeelding, de vorm die we geven aan de onmogelijkheid om te vergeten. Zo heeft Kora van Sicyon het mogelijk gemaakt om ultieme aandacht, een laatste licht te schenken aan een beeld voordat het verdwijnt, het beroemde ‘feeling of light’ waarvan de dichter Etel Adnan spreekt. Alle kunstenaars, historisch en hedendaags, die de Almine Rech-galerij voor deze tentoonstelling heeft verzameld en uitgenodigd, hebben een gemeenschappelijk kenmerk: ze hebben hun bestaan gewijd aan het bijzondere licht dat uit een werk vloeit. Het licht dat ons soms in staat stelt om ons andere werelden, ruimtes en landschappen voor te stellen die vrijer, vreemder, dubbelzinniger, gedurfder en vloeibaarder zijn dan die we al kennen. Plaatsen waar mensen en niet-mensen elkaar ontmoeten om nieuwe verhalen te smeden en andere relaties op te bouwen. Het licht dat soms schijnt op de meest kwetsbaren, de meest vergetenen, de minst erkenden, zodat ze eindelijk uit de schaduw kunnen treden. Een licht dat blijft hangen op de taferelen van de hedendaagse maatschappij, op wat we worden wanneer het gedragingen als consumptie, productie en verzameling tot het goddelijke verheft. Andere stralen richten zich op het vrouwelijk lichaam en wat ermee wordt gedaan, van een hypergeseksualiseerde uitbeelding tot een mogelijke bevrijding van archetypen, ter ondersteuning van het beeld van een krachtige vrouw die eigenaar van haar lichaam is. De vrouwelijke schoonheid krijgt hier de vrijheid om afstandelijk, onverschillig, ongewoon en subversief te zijn, en soms komt deze bevrijding ook tot uiting in een zelfportret. Veel werken kiezen humor als emancipatoir terrein, waar de lach, het groteske, de karikatuur of het monsterlijke de kaders van onze waarnemingen transformeren. De onschuld, een onderwerp dat zich in de geschiedenis van de kunst met name heeft geuit via het motief van het stilleven, wordt hier aangehaald om er nieuwe eigenschappen aan te verlenen. Zo wordt eer betoond aan de macht van de wezens die ons dagelijks leven bevolken, hun delicate en vaak onopgemerkte aanwezigheid. Tot slot komt het voor dat dit licht stilstaat bij een nog onbekende taal, bij achtergelaten sporen waarvan de geschiedenis nog niet is ontcijferd. Alsof onze tekens en talen niet overtuigend genoeg zijn om de oneindige subtiliteit van de waarnemingen en emoties van de levenden tot uiting te brengen. De tentoonstelling Feeling of light belicht een zekere staat van onze wereld, die voortdurend wordt vernieuwd door de energie van de vrouwen waaruit ze bestaat, sinds Kora van Sicyon deze begon te verlichten.
