Un Hiver à Paris

Due to new restrictions in relation to the further spread of Covid-19 in Switzerland, the pop-up exhibition ‘Un Hiver à Gstaad’ will be presented in Paris at the gallery’s front space, 64 rue de Turenne.

Almine Rech is delighted to present ‘Un Hiver à Gstaad Paris’, a group exhibition focused on the act of painting in the 21st century. 

‘Un Hiver à Gstaad Paris’ brings together 22 artists from diverse generations and geographies who demonstrate varying practices within painting. The presented works all embody the notion that this medium at the beginning of the 21^st century continues to be both vital and enduring. It is also a blossoming field of practice and research, catalyzed through engaging new ideologies, new contributors and new forms.

Madelynn Green utilizes an imaginative balance between abstraction and representation, often referencing the visual language of film photography through the use of blurred lines and light. Green’s recent subjects have included family and social dynamics, primarily those found in nightclubs and crowds as seen in her magnetic painting Drinks (2020). 

One value of a contemporary portrait is its ability to reinvent the codes of its own genre. Genesis Tramaine is an expressionist devotional painter who creates abstract portraits of men and women who transcend gender, race and social structures.

Otis Kwame Quaicoe offers a new perspective on African culture through the celebrated form of portraiture. Through his bright and luminous portraits of Black men and women, Quaicoe engages with ideas of empowerment, a subject embodied in the postures of his sitters, who appear set against bright monochromatic backgrounds.                         

Genieve Figgis expertly defines her own contemporary language by subverting and reinterpreting classical portraiture through paintings rich in color, texture and humor. With her portrait Grace (2020), depicting the iconic actress Grace Kelly, Figgis strikes a balance between abstraction and figuration, the ancient and contemporary. 

Marcus Jansen’s ‘Faceless’ portrait series was first painted in 2012 and he continues developing the series today. His characters investigate the secrecy of faceless men in suits, exploring anonymity, power and elitism.

French artist César Piette's work questions the materiality of the image and the nature of painting. His use of traditional techniques—monochromatic layers, perspective, light, composition and bold use of shadow—connects him to the history of figurative painting. Painted with an airbrush, his images, such as Sunset Landscape, also include three-dimensional effects.

Kenny Scharf’s new paintings recall the artist's painterly vocabulary of stylized aliens in colorful patterns he developed in the 1980s, during which time he became known, together with his close friends Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, as one of the central artists involved in what became described as Street Art. 

Vaughn Spann has created three powerful new paintings inspired by his personal experiences. He explains them as follows: “I was stopped and frisked for the first time while I was an undergrad student...I was walking home from studying at a friend’s house. Cops pulled me over. Four other cop cars [came] by. They put me against a gate, and my hands are up, split. That same gesture echoes the X. And, for me, that’s such a symbolic form, and so powerful to this contemporary moment, that I formally needed to figure out the components of that.” 

Foregrounding an interest in the history of portraiture, Chloe Wise examines the multiple channels that lead to the construction of a contemporary self, often through faces of those who are most familiar to her. With her two intimate portraits Inès in the daytime and Inès in the evening, both completed at the end of 2020, Wise masterly celebrates the heroes of everyday life.

« Un Hiver à Gstaad Paris » rassemble 22 artistes de générations et d’origines diverses, chacun riche d’une pratique unique de la peinture. Les œuvres présentées incarnent dans leur ensemble l’idée qu’en ce début de 21^e siècle, la peinture est un moyen d’expression qui demeure permanent et vital. C’est aussi un champ de pratique et de recherche en plein essor, dynamisé par l’apport de nouvelles idéologies, de nouvelles populations et de nouveaux matériaux.

Madelynn Green, plus jeune artiste de l’exposition, atteint un équilibre inventif entre abstraction et représentation dans une œuvre qui fait souvent référence au langage visuel de la photographie argentique à travers son emploi des lignes floues et de la lumière. Parmi ses sujets récents, on trouve les dynamiques familiales et sociales, surtout celles qui s’expriment dans les boîtes de nuit ou les concerts, comme c’est le cas dans son œuvre magnétique Drinks (2020).

L’une des principales qualités du portrait contemporain est sa capacité à réinventer les codes de son propre genre. Genesis Tramaine est une peintre expressionniste et dévotionnelle qui crée des portraits abstraits d’hommes et de femmes transcendant le genre, la race et les structures sociales.

Otis Kwame Quaicoe porte un nouveau regard sur la culture africaine à travers la forme illustre du portrait. Avec ses portraits perçants et lumineux d’hommes et de femmes africains, Quaicoe explore l’idée de l’empowerment, puissamment incarné dans les poses de ses modèles qui se découpent sur un fond monochrome de couleur vive.

Genieve Figgis définit son propre langage contemporain en subvertissant et en réinterprétant le portrait classique dans des toiles riches en couleurs, en textures, et pleines d’humour. Dans son portrait intitulé Grace (2020), qui représente l’iconique actrice Grace Kelly, Figgis atteint un équilibre entre abstraction et figuration, ancien et contemporain.

L’origine des portraits Faceless de Marcus Jansen remonte à 2012, c’est une série qu’il continue à développer aujourd’hui. Les personnages de Faceless interrogent le mystère de ces hommes en costume, sans visage, dans une exploration du pouvoir et des élites.

Le travail de l’artiste français César Piette questionne la matérialité de l’image et la nature de la peinture. Son utilisation des techniques classiques - couches monochromes, perspective, lumière, composition et emploi affirmé de l’ombre - le relie à l’histoire de la peinture figurative. Réalisées à l’aérographe, ses toiles, telle que Sunset Landscape, font également appel à des effets tridimensionnels.

Les nouvelles peintures de Kenny Scharf rappellent le vocabulaire pictural de l’artiste, les aliens stylisés et les motifs colorés qu’il a développés dans les années 80, époque à laquelle il s’est fait un nom - aux côtés de ses proches amis Jean-Michel Basquiat et Keith Haring - comme l'inventeur avec Keith Haring de ce que l’on appellera plus tard le Street Art.

Vaughn Spann a créé trois nouvelles toiles très fortes inspirées par ses expériences personnelles. Il les explique ainsi : « La première fois qu’on m’a arrêté et fouillé, j’étais jeune étudiant… Je rentrais à pied après avoir révisé chez un copain. Des flics m’ont interpelé. Quatre autres voitures de flics sont arrivées. Ils m’ont plaqué contre un portail, les mains levées, les bras écartés. Un geste qui rappelle la lettre X. Et pour moi, c’est une forme si symbolique, si puissante à notre époque, que j’ai fortement ressenti le besoin d’en comprendre les composantes ».

S’intéressant au premier chef à l’histoire du portrait, Chloe Wise explore les multiples voies qui mènent à la construction d’un Moi contemporain, souvent à travers les visages de ceux qui lui sont le plus familiers. Avec ses deux portraits intimistes, Inès in the daytime et Inès in the evening, tous deux achevés fin 2020, Wise rend magistralement hommage aux héros du quotidien.
