Genieve Figgis will have her first solo show at Gallery Met, the visual arts space at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Gallery Met has presented opera-themed exhibitions by many of the leading figures in contemporary art. Figgis’s show coincides with the Met’s new production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, a lush romantic tragedy based on Shakespeare’s play, which will be directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher and star German soprano Diana Damrau and Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo in the title roles. Figgis has reinterpreted the famous story in a series of paintings that proclaim her unique, highly irreverent, and unmistakably Irish style.
