The Wall: Hu Zi

Almine Rech is pleased to present Hu Zi's first solo exhibition with the gallery. 

Shanghai-based artist Hu Zi is most notable for her mesmerizing portraits, which are overflowing with a magnetic quality and depth that are simultaneously powerful and subdued.

Often using notable individuals, ranging from celebrities of the 21st century to historical figures, from Greek mythological figures to references to other artists paintings’. The latter is most recently showcased in her homage to Francisco Goya’s ‘The Naked Maja’ which Hu Zi developed into a 10-part series of her own. While broad in spectrum, every figure in Hu Zi’s work share similarities in their irrefutable strength, while the tenderness of the brush paired with the colors charged with translucency balances out the intensity of the figures, adding a tranquil undertone and pathos that is penetrable to those viewing her work.

In the 10-part decalogy ‘Staring at Maja (After Goya),’ Hu Zi connects Goya’s Maja with subtle changes in each part. Each depiction is reminiscent of the original work, but with the addition of Hu Zi’s signature approach, where themes of rebellion, toughness, and sensuality are ever-present. The hues of greens and positioning changes add an element of surprise to make each work equally self-contained as it is part of a series.

Hu Zi attended the China Academy of Art and the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris from 2000 – 2007, and in 2019 she was part of the artist residency at Swiss Arts Council.

L’artiste Shanghaienne Hu Zi est surtout connue pour ses portraits fascinants, qui débordent d’une qualité magnétique et d’une profondeur à la fois puissante et discrète.

Hu Zi fait souvent appel à diverses personnalités, des célébrités du 21 e  siècle aux personnages historiques, en passant par les figures de la mythologie grecque ou les références à l’œuvre d’autres artistes, comme c’est le cas dans son récent hommage à La Maja nue de Francisco Goya, réalisé sous la forme d’une série en dix parties. Même si elles couvrent un large spectre, toutes les figures que l’on retrouve dans le travail de Hu Zi ont en commun une puissance irréfutable ; la tendresse de son pinceau, associée à sa palette forte et translucide, équilibre l’intensité des figures en y apportant une touche paisible et pathétique que le regardeur perçoit aisément.

Dans son décalogue Staring at Maja (after Goya), Hu Zi rend hommage à la Maja de Goya en opérant de subtils changements dans chacune des parties. Chaque représentation rappelle l’œuvre originale, mais Hu Zi y apporte son regard caractéristique, où les thèmes de la rébellion, de la dureté et de la sensualité sont omniprésents. Les nuances de verts et changements de posture apportent un élément de surprise qui fait que chaque œuvre est à la fois autonome et partie d’un tout.

Hu Zi a étudié à l’Académie des arts de Chine et à la Cité Internationale des Arts de Paris de 2000 à 2007 ; en 2019, elle a participé à une résidence artistique à la Fondation suisse pour la culture.

De in Shanghai gevestigde kunstenares Hu Zi is met name bekend vanwege haar betoverende portretten, die overlopen van een magnetische kwaliteit en diepte die zowel krachtig als ingetogen zijn.

Vaak kiest ze opmerkelijke individuen, van 21 e -eeuwse beroemdheden tot historische figuren, van personages uit de Griekse mythologie tot verwijzingen naar het werk van andere kunstenaars. Zo heeft ze onlangs een 10-delige serie geschilderd als eerbetoon aan ‘De naakte Maja’ van Francisco Goya. Hoewel het spectrum van haar figuren breed is, vertonen alle figuren in Hu Zi’s werk overeenkomsten in hun onweerlegbare kracht. De tederheid van het penseel in combinatie met de doorschijnende kleuren brengt de intensiteit van de figuren in evenwicht, aangevuld met een rustige ondertoon en een pathos dat doordringbaar is voor degenen die haar werk bekijken.

In de 10-delige serie ‘Staring at Maja (After Goya)’ zoekt Hu Zi aansluiting bij de Maja van Francisco Goya, met subtiele veranderingen in elk deel. Elke afbeelding herinnert aan het oorspronkelijke werk, maar met toevoeging van Hu Zi’s onderscheidende benadering waarin thema’s als rebellie, taaiheid en sensualiteit alom aanwezig zijn. De groentinten en positieveranderingen zorgen voor een verrassingselement, waardoor elk werk evenzeer op zichzelf staat als onderdeel is van een serie.

Hu Zi volgde haar opleiding van 2000-2007 aan de China Academy of Art en de Cité Internationale des Arts in Parijs, en in 2019 was ze artist in residence bij de Zwitserse Raad voor de Kunst.
