Francesco Vezzoli presents KARL GOES TO MEMPHIS. Tribute to a historical encounter in Monte Carlo

Almine Rech Monaco is pleased to announce 'Francesco Vezzoli presents: Karl GOES TO MEMPHIS. Tribute to a historic encounter in Monte Carlo', Francesco Vezzoli’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, on view from March 20 to May 24, 2025.

"It was love at first sight. When I saw the Memphis show in September '81 in Milan. I had just got a big apartment in Monte Carlo. And had no idea how to furnish it. I had never lived in a modern building. I wanted it all modern and instantly thought that Memphis would be the Art Deco of the '80s. I was right. The influence was enormous. Memphis tried to breathe fresh air into the word "design." And what I like about all the Memphis stuff is its humor."

When Karl decided to live in Roccabella, he started a new chapter of his life that he was about to illustrate with a radical change of style, the complete opposite of the Grand Siècle apartment where he lived in one of the most beautiful mansions in Faubourg Saint-Germain - one of these sudden changes he often liked to make, that took him out of his own image and undoubtedly proved anew his creative freedom.

As he faced the bright sun and the colours of the sea, Karl felt that Roccabella's Mediterranean modernity demanded a vivid response from him.

This would be the Memphis style.

He had long been attracted to this Mediterranean Sea, that of this particular Rock, that also of Saint-Tropez in those years; and, with his friend Helmut Newton, he had often organised photo shoots there. It was in his La Ponche apartment that, ten years earlier, had been taken this picture of me: I had created my first gold bracelets and had to pose with them, in a dress designed by Karl for Chloé. A very simple dress made up of three jersey parts: a black skirt to which two triangles, one black, one white, were attached to create the top. I had just attached the black part and was about to take the white one, when Helmut exclaimed: "Stop! The look is perfect!". And, faster than I, Karl grabbed a glass of whiskey that he put into my right hand to hide my breast!

On this French Riviera that he loved as much as I did, Karl was about to surround himself, for the first time, with a geometric, childlike and colourful decor. Fine, but why specifically Memphis?

Three qualities characterised Karl: an encyclopaedic culture that he constantly nurtured as he was one of those who only needed 4 to 5 hours of sleep; a love for the present that always took him forward, never looking or turning back; and last but not least, an obvious sense of humour in all his creations as well as in his vision of life and his way of expressing it. To me, Karl's trademark was his caustic, irreverent humour, which applied to everything he dealt with, and thanks to which he was able to approach the Chanel world, i.e. not as a fashion historian but as an heir who was able to extend and adapt his zeitgeist to that of a bygone era.

His way of not taking things too seriously, while still respecting them, did much for our friendship. I remember a Roman soirée, in a Rome that was still that of the dolce vita. Karl had designed for me a black crêpe de Chine strapless dress with geometric gold-lamé embroidery highlights. And I surprised him, making him burst out with laughter, as I arrived with an authentic Thai dancer's headdress brought back from Bangkok, a real wedding cake in the shape of a winged pagoda, topped by a 30-cm-high oriental Eiffel Tower! As we arrived at the party, Karl holding one of my arms and Omar Sharif the other; we met Fellini, who was leaving and who, surprised, asked me: "Stai girando?" (You're making a film?) My extravagance had exceeded his imagination!

It is this same excess, along with his creative enthusiasm, that is at the root of this "full-on Memphis" interior that Karl wanted when he arrived in Monte Carlo.

« Il y a eu de ma part un coup de foudre pour Memphis. En septembre '81 j'avais pris un grand appartement à Monte Carlo sans avoir la moindre idée comment le meubler. Je n'avais jamais vécu dans une maison moderne. Memphis était la solution idéale. J'ai adoré vivre dans cet appartement entouré de tant de couleurs et tant de formes nouvelles. Ma deuxième maison à Monte Carlo n'allait pas avec le Memphis. Je trouve triste de laisser les choses moisir dans un garde-meubles. On ne revient pas sur son propre passé. Memphis représente aujourd'hui le style des années '80 comme rien ne représente mieux les années '20 que l'Art Déco. Une nouvelle génération découvre maintenant Memphis et j'espère qu'ils aimeront Memphis autant que moi je l'ai aimé et je l'aime toujours. »

Lorsque Karl décide d’habiter Roccabella, il inaugure une nouvelle page de sa vie qu’il va illustrer par un radical changement de style, en complète opposition avec l’appartement Grand Siècle qu’il occupe dans un des plus beaux hôtels particuliers du Faubourg Saint-Germain. Une pirouette de celles qu’il aimait souvent faire, qui le projetaient hors de sa propre image et lui apportaient sans doute la preuve toujours renouvelée de sa liberté créatrice…

Face à l’éblouissement du soleil, aux couleurs de la mer, Karl sent que la modernité méditerranéenne de Roccabella exige delui une réponse éclatante.

Ce sera le style Memphis.

Cette Méditerranée, celle de ce rocher si particulier comme celle du Saint-Tropez de ces années-là, l’attire depuis longtemps, et, avec son ami Helmut Newton, il y a souvent organisé des séances de photo. C’est dans son appartement dela Ponche que, dix ans plus tôt, a été prise cette fameuse photo de moi : j’avais créé mes premiers bracelets en or et devais poser avec, dans une robe de Karl pour Chloé. Une robe toute simple composée de trois éléments de jersey, une jupe noire à laquelle venaient s’attacher deux triangles, l’un noir et l’autre blanc qui en formaient le haut ; je venais d’attacher le noir et allais me saisir du blanc, mais Helmut cria « Stop ! le look est parfait ! » et, plus rapide que moi, Karl saisit un verre de whisky qu’il me mit dans la main droite, pour dissimuler mon sein !

Sur cette Côte d’Azur qu’il aime autant que moi, Karl va donc pour la première fois s’entourer d’un décor géométrique, enfantin, coloré. Soit, mais pourquoi tout particulièrement Memphis ?

Trois qualités caractérisent Karl : une culture encyclopédique qu’il nourrit en permanence car il est de ceux qui n’ont besoin que de 4 ou 5 heures de sommeil ; un amour du présent qui l’entraîne constamment à aller de l’avant, à ne jamaisse retourner ni revenir sur ses pas et, last but not least, un sens de l’humour manifeste dans toutes ses créations autantque dans sa vision de la vie et sa façon de l’exprimer. Pour moi, la marque de Karl, c’est cet humour caustique, irrévérencieux, qui s’applique à tout ce qu’il aborde. Et grâce auquel il a su aborder le continent Chanel : non pas en historien de la mode mais en héritier qui a su prolonger et adapter l’esprit de son temps à celui d’une époque révolue.

Cette façon de ne pas prendre les choses trop au sérieux tout en les respectant a beaucoup nourri le lien de notre amitié…  Je me souviens d’une soirée romaine, dans la Rome qui était encore celle de la dolce vita . Karl m’avait dessiné une robe bustier de crêpe de Chine noir rehaussée de broderies géométriques lamées or… Et je lui ai fait la surprise qui le fit rire aux éclats d’arriver avec une authentique coiffe de danseuse thaïlandaise rapportée de Bangkok, véritable pièce montée en forme de pagode ailée sur laquelle se dressait une tour Eiffel orientale de 30 cm de hauteur ! Au moment où nous arrivions à la soirée, Karl me tenant par un bras et Omar Sharif par l’autre, nous croisons Fellini qui en sortait et, stupéfait, me demande : « Stai girando ? (Tu tournes un film ?) ». Mon outrance avait dépassé son imagination !

C’est cette même démesure portée par son enthousiasme créateur qui est à l’origine de ce décor « Tout-Memphis » voulu par Karl pour son arrivée à Monte Carlo.

"È stato amore a prima vista quando, nel settembre dell’81 a Milano, ho visto la mostra di Memphis. Avevo appena acquistato un grande appartamento a Monte Carlo e non avevo la minima idea di come arredarlo. Non avevo mai vissuto in un edificio moderno. Desideravo un arredamento completamente contemporaneo e subito ho pensato che Memphis sarebbe stato l'Art Déco degli anni '80. E avevo ragione. L'influenza è stata enorme. Memphis ha cercato di portare una ventata di aria fresca alla parola ‘design’. Ciò che più mi affascina di tutti gli oggetti Memphis è il loro senso dell'umorismo."

Quando Karl si trasferì a Roccabella, inaugurò un nuovo capitolo della sua vita, segnato da un radicale cambiamento di stile, in netto contrasto con l’estetica del suo appartamento Grand Siècle in uno degli edifici più raffinati di Faubourg Saint-Germain. Era uno di quei cambiamenti improvvisi che amava intraprendere, un gesto che lo spingeva oltre i confini della propria identità e testimoniava, ancora una volta, la sua assoluta libertà creativa.

Di fronte al sole splendente e ai colori intensi del mare, Karl avvertì che la modernità mediterranea di Roccabella richiedeva una risposta altrettanto audace. E quella risposta sarebbe stata lo stile Memphis.

Era da sempre affascinato dal Mar Mediterraneo, e in particolare da questa Rocca, così come da quello di Saint-Tropez in quegli anni, e, insieme al suo amico Helmut Newton, vi aveva spesso organizzato servizi fotografici. Proprio nel suo appartamento di La Ponche, dieci anni prima, era stata scattata questa mia foto. Avevo appena creato i miei primi braccialetti d’oro e dovevo posarvi indossandoli, insieme a un abito disegnato da Karl per Chloé. Era un abito molto semplice, composto da tre parti in jersey: una gonna nera a cui erano attaccati due triangoli di tessuto, uno nero e uno bianco, che formavano il top. Avevo appena sistemato la parte nera e stavo per prendere quella bianca, quando Helmut esclamò: "Basta! Il look è perfetto!". Karl, più veloce di me, afferrò un bicchiere di whisky e me lo mise nella mano destra per coprire il mio seno!

Su questa Costa Azzurra, che amava quanto me, Karl stava per circondarsi, per la prima volta, di un arredamento geometrico, fanciullesco e colorato. D’accordo, ma perché proprio Memphis?

Tre qualità definivano Karl: una cultura enciclopedica che coltivava instancabilmente, essendo una di quelle persone che necessitano di appena quattro o cinque ore di sonno; un amore per il presente che lo spingeva costantemente in avanti, senza mai fermarsi a guardare o tornare indietro; e infine, ma non meno importante, un innegabile senso dell'umorismo, evidente in tutte le sue creazioni, così come nella sua concezione della vita e nel modo in cui la esprimeva. Per me, il tratto distintivo di Karl era il suo umorismo caustico e irriverente, che permeava tutto ciò di cui si occupava. Grazie a ciò, non si avvicinò al mondo Chanel come uno storico della moda, ma come un erede capace di espandere e adattare il suo zeitgeist a quello di un'epoca passata.

Il suo modo di non prendere le cose troppo sul serio, pur rispettandole, ha avuto un grande impatto sulla nostra amicizia. Ricordo ancora una serata in una Roma che era ancora quella della dolce vita. Karl mi aveva disegnato un abito nero in crêpe de Chine senza spalline, con ricami geometrici in oro-lamé. Lo sorpresi facendolo ridere quando arrivai con un copricapo da autentica danzatrice thailandese, portato direttamente da Bangkok: una torta nuziale a forma di pagoda alata, sormontata da una Torre Eiffel orientale alta 30 cm! Arrivati alla festa, con Karl che mi teneva un braccio e Omar Sharif l'altro, incontrammo Fellini che stava per andarsene e, visibilmente sorpreso, mi chiese: "Stai girando [un film]?". La mia stravaganza aveva superato la sua immaginazione! È proprio questo eccesso, unito al suo entusiasmo creativo, che ha ispirato l'interior design "total Memphis" che Karl ha voluto quando è arrivato a Monte Carlo.
