Transparents John Armleder & le Musée Barbier-Mueller

Entitled Transparents,  John Armleder & le Musée Barbier-Mueller, this new exhibition proposes a conversation marked by cultural exchanges and aesthetic connections between works mainly in glass by the Geneva artist and pieces from Africa, Asia and Oceania selected from the Barbier-Mueller collection. 

A close friend of the Barbier-Mueller family,  John Armleder made a selection from his body of work starting from a glass sculpture he made in 2017 as a tribute to Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller and which was exhibited at the museum the same year. He has chosen works that evoke transparency which have been until now rarely or never exhibited. Pieces from the Barbier-Mueller collection were chosen for the aesthetic connections or contrasts they form with the artist's works, and for their potential, with the latter, to address and explore the themes of knowledge and traditional skills transmission, of splintering or embedding. Brought together as a group, certain works become the protagonists of a mythological or fantasized narrative. 

Once again, following on from the success of the exhibition Scarifications, Miquel Barceló & le Musée Barbier-Mueller, this collaboration between an artist and the Musée Barbier-Mueller takes a fresh look at a remarkable collection.

Intitulée « Transparents,  John Armleder & le musée Barbier-Mueller », cette nouvelle exposition propose une conversation empreinte de va-et-vient culturels et de rapprochements esthétiques entre des oeuvres majoritairement en verre de John Armleder et des pièces d’Afrique, d’Asie et d’Océanie sélectionnées dans la collection Barbier-Mueller. 

 Ami proche de la famille Barbier-Mueller, John Armleder est parti d’une sculpture en verre, qu’il a réalisée en 2017 en hommage à Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller et qui a été exposée au musée la même année, pour opérer une sélection dans son corpus. Il a choisi des oeuvres évoquant la transparence, jusqu’ici peu ou pas exposées.  Les pièces de la collection Barbier-Mueller ont quant à elles été retenues pour les connivences ou les contrastes esthétiques qu’elles forment avec les oeuvres de l’artiste, ainsi que pour leur potentiel, avec celles-ci, à aborder et explorer les thématiques de la transmission des savoirs et de savoir-faire traditionnels, d’éclatement ou d’enchâssement. Réunies en groupe, certaines oeuvres deviennent protagonistes d’un récit, mythologique ou fantasmé. 

Cette fois encore, et après le succès de l’exposition « Scarifications, Miquel Barceló & le musée Barbier-Mueller », cette collaboration entre un artiste et le musée Barbier-Mueller porte un regard renouvelé sur des collections remarquables en honorant le principe de « remise en jeu » cher à John Armleder.
