Genieve Figgis Unearthly Pursuits

Almine Rech is pleased to present Unearthly Pursuits, Genieve Figgis' upcoming solo exhibition in Venice, on view from September 29 to December 1, 2024.

Genieve Figgis is fascinated by how people interact with their environments: the choices they make, the way they perform. In Unearthly Pursuits, her figures blend in, yet stand out uncannily. Genieve Figgis’ new exhibition evokes the allure of Venice, where visitors come to enact a romanticized version of history, a history they were never actually part of.

Figgis depicts a time long before technology, while hinting at the charade of contemporary life with figures pursuing an idea of perfection: proudly posing as they glide past on a gondola; chitchatting at lavish parties; coquettishly enjoying slow city strolls in frilly costumes. Whilst smiling politely, they seem acutely aware that they are being observed. Despite their endearing efforts to blend in and appear normal, they cannot mask their yearnings, their envy or their awkwardness.

Genieve Figgis is celebrated for her unique way of trusting paint to run unpredictably over the canvas, an unconscious and rebellious process in which magical things can happen. She embraces fluidity and innocence, the exciting thrill of possible failure. As her figures are rendered freely in acrylic paint, she sets them free, encouraging them to reveal their unrestrained, unconventional and fantastical nature. In her world, one can be any colour, age, shape or size, and exist without judgment. We look on as her figures appear, seduce, pursue and perform harmoniously in a reality where dogmatic expectations and ideals dissolve, allowing individuality, humour and strangeness to reign.

Genieve Figgis was born in Dublin in 1972. She lives and works in County Wicklow, Ireland.

Genieve Figgis è affascinata dal modo in cui le persone interagiscono con il loro ambiente: le scelte che fanno, il modo in cui si comportano. In Unearthly Pursuits, le sue figure si confondono, ma si distinguono in modo sorprendente. La nuova mostra di Genieve Figgis evoca il fascino di Venezia, dove i visitatori vengono a ricreare una versione romantica della storia, una storia di cui non hanno mai fatto parte. Figgis ritrae un'epoca molto precedente alla tecnologia, alludendo al contempo alla farsa della vita contemporanea con figure che perseguono un'idea di perfezione: in posa orgogliosa mentre scivolano su una gondola; chiacchierando a feste sfarzose; godendosi in modo civettuolo lente passeggiate in città in costumi succinti. Pur sorridendo educatamente, sembrano consapevoli di essere osservate. Nonostante i loro accattivanti sforzi per mimetizzarsi e apparire normali, non riescono a mascherare i loro desideri, la loro invidia o la loro goffaggine.

Genieve Figgis è celebre per il suo modo unico di lasciare che la pittura scorra imprevedibilmente sulla tela, un processo inconsapevole e ribelle in cui possono accadere cose magiche. L'artista abbraccia la fluidità e l'innocenza, l'eccitante brivido del possibile fallimento. Quando le sue figure sono rese liberamente con la pittura acrilica, le lascia libere, incoraggiandole a rivelare la loro natura sfrenata, anticonvenzionale e fantastica. Nel suo mondo si può essere di qualsiasi colore, età, forma o dimensione ed esistere senza giudizio. Guardiamo le sue figure apparire, sedurre, inseguire e esibirsi armoniosamente in una realtà in cui le aspettative e gli ideali dogmatici si dissolvono, permettendo all' originalità, all'umorismo e alla stranezza di regnare. 

Genieve Figgis é nata a  Dublino nel 1972.  Vive e lavora nella Contea di Wicklow, in Irlanda..
