Zio Ziegler Reverse Paintings

Almine Rech Brussels is pleased to present Reverse Paintings, Zio Ziegler’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, on view from September 12 to November 2, 2024.

When thinking of time, we often think of a timeline and focus either on planning the future or reflecting on the past, rarely considering the present. Similarly, when contemplating our lifetime, our viewpoint considers the endless fractals of decades, days, and seconds without understanding the fixed point, its impending end. Perhaps our brains are wired to the laws of thermodynamics, specifically entropy, so we’re incapable of fully comprehending such a terminal point. And without an exact moment, looking at things in reverse is virtually impossible. However, art provides a rare opportunity to bend such a viewpoint. By compressing our ways into artifacts, art allows us to see our decisions cataloged and examine the trend lines and choices made over time.

An example of such a perspective is Piet Mondrian and his groundbreaking trajectory. Looking at his most iconic works, one wouldn’t consider the sacrifices required to achieve that simplicity. Yet, looking at a lifetime of work in reverse, we can almost distinguish each deliberate decision - every trimming of a branch, doubling down on a motif, and reduction of a hue that allowed the ultimate simplicity of form to be achieved. So, however surprising, it makes all the sense that Zio Ziegler cites Mondrian as a major influence for his Reverse Paintings, a series of works comprised entirely of sacrifices in aesthetics, labor, or anything else extraneous to the essential form.

Over the last decade, I’ve witnessed Ziegler’s practice evolving from tightly rendered gouache paintings to gigantic murals, from bronze sculptures to florid maximalist panels. Continuously letting each in sequence give way to the next evolution of form, the reverse paintings feel like a logical continuation of this movement. They are made through indulgence and then carved into being with restraint as if building the temple to destroy the idol. And if art intends to mirror nature, the sacrifice could be a sign of bounty, especially knowing that nature favors simplicity through evolution. In that sense, the reduction, editing, and cutting of form accelerates the evolutionary journey of simplification. With shards of form echoing through layers of heavy oil paint and factions of labored moments sitting as an invisible foundation rather than a composition component, in Reverse Paintings, we see a giant tree cut at its core, revealing rings that resemble years.

And it’s important to underline how consequential some of these sacrifices must have been, both personally and professionally. Besides perpetually and indicatively resisting fitting most labels he has been working under, one of Ziegler’s qualities that struck me early on is how fearless and driven he is about his mark-making, experimenting, and producing work in general. The dense surfaces packed with tight marks or dynamic strokes with no room to breathe are an obvious testament to this. From ink-on-paper illustrations over paintings and murals to sculptures and installations, his approach keeps modifying as he searches for the right image worth making. The new loose, figurative paintings stem directly from controlled, flat surface Mandala-like compositions that at some point got interrupted with gestures. These gestures were introduced to show that the intention and the process were two different things while allowing the depiction of two sides of the narrative in one image.

Instead of following the traditional painterly modus operandi, the intention was buried in the process, underneath layers of the rummage for the right synthesis and resonance. “I'm not going after an end result, but after a process that might crystalize in a moment,” Ziegler mentions, explaining how the perception of painting moved from being tight, controlled, and obeying the laws of image-making to a new territory that feels fresh, improvisational, and way more personal and honest. The inputs developed stylistically over the last 15 years, such as precision, linework, forms, color, etc., are crucial navigation tools leading to this elusive goal. Metaphorically, while searching for a moment that is hard to repeat or recreate, he took on the role of a jazz musician improvising toward a fleeting moment of purity, balance, and harmony.

However, such an approach is not customary in a world that favors the instant and the predictable. The established, traditional painting process required follows a typical and immediate pathway - artists sketch, outline, and underpaint to build toward an ultimate near-term result. Yet, the problem with tradition is that it is repetitive, limiting, and unexciting, often optimized for creating a product. The confluence of these constraints does not allow for uncertainty or radical departures and a biodiverse layer of experiments within the commercial template. In turn, much of the maker’s personality, emotional state, or the atmosphere of their surroundings that once seeped into the work are now vacant. And the fewer anomalies exist, the less the artist can sacrifice in order to reach for simplicity. So it was Ziegler’s status as an outsider, a muralist, and a maximalist that allowed the foundation of capricious experiments to amass. What seemed fractured through a linear lens now appears as a bedrock for his new paintings when viewed in reverse. Now, when Ziegler carves into his past, the marks yield complex work that requires a painstaking, Jenga-like removal of support pillars. Familiar with reversing the framework of viewing and experiencing the artwork through creating murals in public space, the reverse paintings aim for the form that hangs on the fundamental lessons gleaned from years of exploration.

“My exploration of painting, of what strong form is, made me re-evaluate that paintings are not aesthetic - they’re emotional,” Ziegler explains, adding, “beauty and aesthetics are merely an optimal probabilistic distribution.” Since the interpretation of something so common and familiar has changed significantly, the new, almost science-backed process starts with a grand intention that keeps getting refined and refined. To some extent akin to fractal patterns highlighting the complexity and natural order in Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, the refinement occurs by adding new layers of oil stick marks, but strictly within a figurative template. Instead of a single image, an abundance of visuals, sometimes multiple paintings, end up on top of each other, pushing everything to the edge of obscurity. The repetitive layering results in material buildup, a mass of dissolved visual information filled with scars representing the moments of giving up on the idea. During this stage, Ziegler fights the tendency to hold onto the “tricks” and instead succumbs, leans in, and embraces the entropic chaos beyond rational thinking. The goal is the intangible feeling of oneness, achieved while relinquishing to the laborious technique and essentially forgetting the painting process. Such an innate approach creates an infinite web of diverging and converging paths used as the foundation for the final image, tapping into the parallel coexistence of multiple realities. It also complies with quantum mechanics theories, demonstrating that painting can exist in multiple states, like anything else in nature, until it is observed and the conscious mind forces it into a box.

From this point, the process makes an unexpected U-turn - the raw material built from their amalgamation is reverse painted to a form that defines the final picture in the vein of artists whose process involves sculpting the abundance to the essential (Terry Winters with his scientific expanding on a snippet of natural life and the repetition of examining a form or Susan Rothenberg with her dynamic compositions and bold gestural brushwork). The idea to avoid conscious decision-making and bypass the conventional dynamics and structures of the creative process comes from the ambition to harness the integrity of spontaneous, immediate gestures. As all the ad-lib layers homogenize within the same foundation - the figure - the finished work contains its untold stories, dramas, excitements, serenity, and frustrations that, although hardly visible, genuinely shape it. Similar to the way that Piet Mondrian moved from being inspired by the landscape to stripping it all back and working with a grid as the main guide, Ziegler is taking the complexity of the figure and pulling it back to the rawest, most fundamental and essential elevation of that form. Ultimately, the uncertainty and a gamble of sorts fuel the quest that manifests the fundamental aspect of human nature to keep exploring, strive for new goals, and push things further. A pursuit which Carl Rogers summarized by stating, "The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination."

Quand on pense au temps, on imagine souvent une chronologie et soit on planifie son avenir, soit on réfléchit au passé, mais on s'intéresse rarement au présent. De même, quand on pense à sa vie, notre angle de vue s'attarde aux nombreuses fractales des décennies, des jours et des secondes, sans en comprendre son point fixe, sa fin imminente. Peut-être les lois de la thermodynamique, et surtout de l'entropie, sont-elles ancrées dans notre cerveau, et nous sommes donc incapables de cerner pleinement un tel point final. Et sans moment précis, il est impossible de regarder les choses en sens inverse. Cependant, l'art fournit l'opportunité exceptionnelle de ployer ce point de vue. En réduisant nos comportements à des faits tangibles, l'art nous permet de cataloguer nos décisions et d'examiner les grandes lignes et les choix qui ont été faits au fil du temps.

Un exemple illustrant cette perspective est celle de Piet Mondrian et sa trajectoire innovante. Si l'on considère ses œuvres les plus emblématiques, on ne prendrait pas en considération les sacrifices nécessaires pour aboutir à une telle simplicité. Pourtant, si l'on regarde l'œuvre de toute une vie en sens inverse, on remarque presque chacune des décisions conscientes – chaque branche élaguée, la répétition d'un motif, la réduction d'une teinte – qui ont permis d'aboutir à l'épuration ultime de la forme. Aussi surprenant soit-il, il est donc tout à fait logique que Zio Ziegler cite Mondrian comme une influence majeure de ses Reverse Paintings (ou « Peintures en sens inverse »), une série d'œuvres faites uniquement de sacrifices en matière d'esthétique, de travail ou de toute chose extérieure à la forme essentielle.                     

Au cours des dernières décennies, j'ai vu la pratique de Ziegler évoluer, de peintures à la gouache détaillées à de gigantesques peintures murales, de sculptures en bronze à des panneaux particulièrement chargés. En laissant chaque peinture céder continuellement, tout à tour, à la prochaine évolution de la forme, les peintures en sens inverse semblent être la continuation logique de ce mouvement. Elles sont le fruit d'une indulgence et sont ensuite façonnées avec retenue tel un temple édifié pour en détruire l'idole. Et si l'art entend imiter la nature, le sacrifice pourrait être signe d'abondance, sachant que la nature privilégie la simplicité au fil de l'évolution. En ce sens, la réduction, la correction et l'élagage de la forme accélèrent le parcours de l'évolution vers la simplification. À travers des fragments de forme qui se font écho à travers d'épaisses couches de peinture à l'huile et des moments travaillés ponctuels qui composent une fondation invisible plutôt que d'en être de simples éléments de composition, on voit, dans Reverse Paintings, un arbre géant coupé en son centre, dévoilant des anneaux qui ressemblent à des années.

Et soulignons à quel point certains de ces sacrifices ont dus être importants, autant au niveau personnel qu'au niveau professionnel. Outre le fait que Ziegler évite perpétuellement et de manière évidente de se conformer à la plupart des étiquettes sous lesquelles il a travaillé, une qualité m'a très tôt frappé chez lui : il marque et produit son art et expérimente sans peur et avec détermination. Les surfaces denses couvertes de marques serrées ou de coups de pinceaux dynamiques sans air ni espace en témoignent de manière flagrante. Des illustrations à l'encre sur papier par-dessus la peinture et les œuvres murales aux sculptures et installations, son approche change sans cesse au fil de ses recherches pour trouver l'image qui convient. Les nouvelles peintures figuratives, moins denses, émanent directement de compositions contrôlées, sur surface plane, semblables à des mandalas, soudainement interrompues de gestes. Ces gestes ont été ajoutés afin de montrer que l'intention et le procédé sont deux choses distinctes qui, ensemble, permettent la représentation de deux aspects du récit en une image.

Au lieu de suivre le mode opératoire traditionnel de la peinture, l'intention est dissimulée dans le procédé, sous des couches de recherche de la bonne synthèse et de la bonne résonance. « Je ne recherche pas un résultat final, mais plutôt un procédé qui pourrait soudain se figer », dit Ziegler, qui explique que la perception de la peinture est passée d'un aspect serré, contrôlé, selon les lois de la création d'images à un nouveau domaine plein de fraîcheur, d'improvisation et bien plus personnel et honnête. Les apports développés d'un point de vue stylistique au cours des 15 dernières années, tels que la précision, le dessin, la forme, la couleur, etc., s'avèrent des outils indispensables pour frayer un chemin vers ce but insaisissable. Métaphoriquement parlant, tout en recherchant un moment qui serait difficile à recréer, il prend le rôle d'un musicien de jazz, improvisant en vue d'un moment éphémère de pureté, d'équilibre et d'harmonie.

Cependant, une telle approche n'est pas ordinaire dans un monde qui tend à privilégier l'immédiat et le prévisible. Le procédé pictural nécessaire, traditionnel et établi, suit une approche typique et immédiate : l'artiste esquisse, délimite et prépare la surface à peindre pour aboutir à un résultat pratiquement fini. Mais le problème de la tradition, c'est que c'est répétitif, limité et peu passionnant, souvent optimisé pour la création d'un produit. Ensemble, ces contraintes ne permettent pas d'incertitude, d'éloignement radical ou encore de couche riche d'expérimentations au sein du modèle commercial. La personnalité du créateur, son état émotionnel ou l'atmosphère de son environnement qui s'est infiltrée dans le travail sont alors largement absents. Et moins il y a d'anomalies, moins l'artiste peut faire de sacrifices en vue d'atteindre la simplicité. C'est donc le statut de Ziegler, venant de l'extérieur, en tant que muraliste et maximaliste, qui a mené à une base fondée sur l'accumulation d'expérimentations capricieuses. Ce qui semblait fragmenté à travers une perspective linéaire se révèle désormais être un fondement pour ses nouvelles peintures vues en sens inverse. Dès lors, quand Ziegler sculpte dans son passé, les marques résultent en un travail complexe qui demande la suppression laborieuse et délicate des piliers de soutien, comme un jeu de construction Jenga. L'artiste étant habitué à inverser le cadre permettant de voir et de faire l'expérience de l'œuvre d'art lors de sa création de peintures murales dans des lieux publics, ses peintures inversées recherchent la forme qui émane des leçons fondamentales accumulées après des années d'exploration.

« Mon exploration de la peinture, de ce qui constitue une forme puissante, m'a fait réévalué le fait que les peintures ne sont pas esthétiques – elles sont émouvantes », note Ziegler. « La beauté et l'esthétique ne sont qu'une distribution probabiliste optimale. » L'interprétation de quelque chose de si ordinaire et familier ayant beaucoup changé, le nouveau procédé, presque scientifique, commence par une intention ambitieuse qui ne cesse de s'affiner. Se rapprochant quelque peu des motifs fractaux qui mettent en valeur l'ordre complexe et naturel dans les peintures de dripping de Jackson Pollock, l'affinement progresse par l'addition de couches de marques de bâton d'huile, mais exclusivement au sein d'un modèle figuratif. Au lieu d'une seule image, une abondance d’éléments visuels, voire parfois plusieurs peintures, s'empilent, repoussant tout aux confins de l'obscurité. Les couches répétitives donnent lieu à une accumulation de matériaux, une quantité d'informations visuelles dissoutes, pleines de cicatrices représentant les moments d'abandon de l'idée. À ce stade, Ziegler lutte contre une tendance à retenir des « astuces » et succombe plutôt au chaos entropique, se penche sur lui et l'accepte, au-delà de la pensée rationnelle. Le but est le sentiment impalpable d'unité, atteint en abandonnant une technique laborieuse et en oubliant quasiment le procédé picturale. Une approche aussi innée crée un réseau infini de chemins divergents et convergents servant de fondation à l'image finale, puisant dans la coexistence parallèle de réalités multiples. Elle respecte aussi les théories de la mécanique quantique, montrant que la peinture peut exister dans divers états, comme toute chose dans la nature, jusqu'à ce qu'on l'observe et qu'on la soumette à une taxonomie.

De là, le procédé fait un demi-tour inattendu : le matériau premier formé par accumulation est peint en sens inverse pour aboutir à une forme qui définit l'image finale dans le style d'artistes dont le procédé implique de sculpter l'abondance vers l'essentiel (tel Terry Winters avec son expansion scientifique sur une bribe de vie naturelle et la répétition de l'examen d'une forme, ou encore Susan Rothenberg avec ses compositions dynamiques et ses grands gestes au pinceau). L'idée d'éviter la prise de décision consciente et les dynamiques et structures conventionnelles du procédé créatif vient du désir d'exploiter l'intégrité des gestes spontanés et immédiats. Avec l'homogénéisation de toutes les couches improvisées au sein d'une même fondation – la figure –, l'œuvre achevée contient ses histoires inédites, ses drames, ses moments forts, sa sérénité et ses frustrations qui, bien qu'à peine visibles, la façonnent véritablement. À l'instar de Piet Mondrian qui, initialement inspiré par le paysage, l'a entièrement dépouillé pour travailler à partir d'une grille comme guide principal, Ziegler part de la complexité de la figure pour la ramène à l'élévation la plus brute, la plus fondamentale et la plus essentielle de cette forme. Au final, l'incertitude et une sorte de pari stimulent la quête qui constitue l'aspect fondamental de la nature humaine de continuer à explorer, d'atteindre de nouveaux objectifs et d'aller plus loin. Une quête que Carl Rogers résume ainsi : « [l]a belle vie est un procédé, non un état. C'est une direction, non une destination ».

Wanneer we nadenken over de tijd, denken we vaak aan een tijdlijn en maken we plannen voor de toekomst of blikken we terug op het verleden. Zelden denken we na over het heden. Op dezelfde manier beschouwen we onze levensduur als een eindeloze reeks van decennia, dagen en seconden, zonder het vaste punt, het naderende einde, te begrijpen. Misschien zijn onze hersenen bedraad volgens de wetten van de thermodynamica, met name de entropie, waardoor we niet in staat zijn om zo’n eindpunt volledig te bevatten. En zonder een exact moment is het vrijwel onmogelijk om de dingen omgekeerd te bekijken. Kunst biedt echter een zeldzame kans om dit gezichtspunt om te buigen. Door de handelingen van ons leven samen te persen tot artefacten, biedt kunst ons de mogelijkheid om onze beslissingen gecatalogiseerd te zien en onderzoek te doen naar de trendlijnen en keuzes die in de loop der tijd zijn gemaakt.

Een voorbeeld van een dergelijk perspectief is Piet Mondriaan met zijn grensverleggende ontwikkelingstraject. Wanneer we naar zijn meest iconische werken kijken, denken we niet aan de offers die nodig zijn om die eenvoud te bereiken. Maar als we terugblikken op het werk van zijn hele leven, kunnen we bijna elk weloverwogen besluit onderscheiden – het bijsnijden van een tak, het verdubbelen van een motief en het verzachten van een tint om een ultiem eenvoudige vorm te creëren. Dus hoe verrassend het ook lijkt, het is volkomen logisch dat Zio Ziegler Mondriaan noemt als de grote inspiratiebron voor zijn Reverse Paintings, een reeks werken die volledig bestaat uit opofferingen op het gebied van esthetiek, arbeid of iets anders dat vreemd is aan de essentiële vorm.

In het afgelopen decennium heb ik Ziegler’s praktijk zien ontwikkelen van gedetailleerde gouache-schilderijen naar gigantische muurschilderingen, van bronzen sculpturen naar kleurrijke maximalistische panelen.

De Reverse Paintings, die om beurten plaatsmaken voor de volgende evolutie in vorm, voelen aan als een logische voortzetting van deze ontwikkeling. Ze zijn met toegeeflijkheid gemaakt en vervolgens met terughoudendheid uitgekerfd, als de bouw van een tempel om het godenbeeld te vernietigen. En als de kunst tot doel heeft de natuur te weerspiegelen, kan het offer een teken zijn van overvloed, vooral als we beseffen dat de natuur eenvoud begunstigt door middel van evolutie. In die zin versnelt het reduceren, bewerken en bijsnijden van de vorm de evolutionaire reis naar vereenvoudiging. Met scherven van vorm die door zware lagen olieverf heen echoën en facties van moeizame momenten die als onzichtbaar fundament dienen in plaats van als onderdeel van de compositie, zien we in Reverse Paintings een gigantische boom die is omgehakt, waardoor ringen verschijnen die op jaren lijken.

En het is belangrijk om te benadrukken hoe groot de gevolgen van sommige van deze offers geweest moeten zijn, zowel persoonlijk als professioneel. Niet alleen pleegt hij voortdurend en indicatief verzet tegen het ‘passen’ bij de etiketten waaronder hij heeft gewerkt, Ziegler heeft nog een kwaliteit die mij al vroeg opviel, namelijk de grote onverschrokkenheid en gedrevenheid waarmee hij zijn stempel drukt, experimenteert en in het algemeen zijn werken produceert. De densiteit van de oppervlakken vol strakke lijnen of dynamische streken zonder ademruimte zijn hiervan een duidelijk bewijs. Van illustraties met inkt op papier tot schilderijen en van muurschilderingen tot sculpturen en installaties, zijn aanpak verandert voortdurend terwijl hij zoekt naar het juiste beeld, dat het waard is om gemaakt te worden. De nieuwe losse, figuratieve schilderijen komen rechtstreeks voort uit gecontroleerde, mandala-achtige composities op een vlakke ondergrond, die op een zeker punt werden onderbroken door gebaren.

Deze gebaren werden geïntroduceerd om te laten zien dat de intentie en het proces twee verschillende dingen zijn, terwijl twee kanten van het verhaal in één beeld konden worden afgeschilderd.

In plaats van de traditionele werkwijze van een schilder te volgen, begraaft de kunstenaar zijn intentie in het proces, onder lagen van wroetend zoeken naar de juiste synthese en resonantie. “Ik ben niet op zoek naar een eindresultaat, maar naar een proces dat kan kristalliseren in een moment”, verklaart Ziegler, die uitlegt hoe zijn perceptie van schilderen is veranderd van strak, gecontroleerd en gehoorzaam aan de wetten van het scheppen van beelden naar een nieuw gebied dat fris, improvisatorisch en veel persoonlijker en eerlijker aanvoelt. De inputs die in de afgelopen 15 jaar stilistisch zijn ontwikkeld, zoals precisie, lijnwerk, vormen, kleur en dergelijke, zijn cruciale navigatiehulpmiddelen die naar dit ongrijpbare doel leiden. Metaforisch gezien nam hij, zoekend naar een moment dat moeilijk te herhalen of te herscheppen is, de rol aan van jazzmuzikant die improviseert op weg naar een vluchtig moment van puurheid, balans en harmonie.

Een dergelijke werkwijze is echter niet gebruikelijk in een wereld die de voorkeur geeft aan het kant-en-klare en het voorspelbare. Het gevestigde, traditionele schilderproces volgt een kenmerkend en onmiddellijk traject: eerste schets, omtrek en ondergrond om toe te werken naar een ultiem resultaat op de korte termijn. Maar het probleem met traditie is dat het repetitief, beperkend en saai is, aangezien het vaak is geoptimaliseerd voor het creëren van een product. De samenloop van deze beperkingen biedt geen ruimte voor onzekerheid of radicale afwijkingen en een biodiverse laag van experimenten binnen het commerciële sjabloon. Ook verdwijnt een groot deel van de persoonlijkheid van de maker, diens emotionele toestand of de sfeer van zijn of haar omgeving die ooit in het werk sijpelden. En hoe minder anomalieën er zijn, hoe minder de kunstenaar kan opofferen om eenvoud te bereiken. Het was dus Ziegler’s status als buitenstaander, muurschilder en maximalist die het fundament legde voor grillige experimenten. Dat wat kijkend door een lineaire lens versnipperd leek, blijkt achteraf de hoeksteen voor zijn nieuwe schilderijen te zijn. Wanneer Ziegler nu in zijn verleden kerft, leiden de markeringen tot complex werk dat vraagt om een zorgvuldige, Jenga-achtige verwijdering van steunpilaren. Vertrouwd met de omkering van het raamwerk voor het bekijken en ervaren van kunst dankzij het maken van muurschilderingen in de openbare ruimte, streven de Reverse Paintings naar de vorm die leunt op fundamentele lessen, opgedaan tijdens jaren aan verkenning.

“Mijn verkenning van schilderen, van wat een sterke vorm is, heeft mij doen beseffen dat schilderijen niet esthetisch zijn, maar emotioneel”, legt Ziegler uit. Hij voegt eraan toe: “Schoonheid en esthetiek zijn slechts een optimale probabilistische verdeling.” Aangezien de interpretatie van iets zo alledaags en vertrouwds beduidend is veranderd, begint het nieuwe, bijna wetenschappelijk onderbouwde proces met een grootse intentie die steeds meer wordt verfijnd. De verfijning, die in zekere zin verwant is aan fractale patronen die de complexiteit en natuurlijke orde in de druppelschilderijen van Jackson Pollock benadrukken, treedt op door de toevoeging van nieuwe lagen van vaste olieverf, maar strikt binnen een figuratief sjabloon. Er ontstaat niet één enkele afbeelding; een overvloed aan beelden – soms meerdere schilderijen – eindigt boven op elkaar, waardoor alles naar de rand van obscuriteit wordt geduwd. Het herhaaldelijk toevoegen van lagen leidt tot ophoping van materiaal, een massa van opgeloste visuele informatie vol littekens die herinneren aan de momenten waarop het idee werd opgegeven. In dit stadium vecht Ziegler tegen de neiging om de bekende ‘trucjes’ toe te passen. In plaats daarvan zwicht hij, beweegt hij mee, omarmt hij de entropische chaos voorbij het rationele denken. Zijn doel is het ongrijpbare gevoel van eenheid, bereikt door afstand te doen van de bewerkelijke techniek en het schilderproces in wezen te vergeten. Een dergelijke aangeboren benadering creëert een oneindig web van divergerende en convergerende paden, gebruikt als fundament voor het uiteindelijke beeld door de parallelle co-existentie van meerdere realiteiten aan te boren. Dit sluit ook aan bij de theorieën van de kwantummechanica door aan te tonen dat schilderkunst in meerdere toestanden kan bestaan, zoals alles in de natuur, totdat het wordt waargenomen en de bewuste geest het in een kader dwingt.

Vanaf dit punt maakt het proces een onverwachte U-bocht: het ruwe materiaal dat uit samensmelting is opgebouwd, wordt terug geschilderd tot een vorm die het uiteindelijke beeld bepaalt, in de stijl van kunstenaars van wie het proces bestaat uit het boetseren van het essentiële uit het overvloedige (Terry Winters met zijn wetenschappelijke uitbreiding van een fragment van het natuurlijke leven of Susan Rothenberg met haar dynamische composities en gedurfde gebarende penseelvoering). Het idee om bewuste besluitvorming te vermijden en de conventionele dynamiek en structuren van het creatieve proces te omzeilen, komt voort uit de ambitie om de integriteit van spontane, onmiddellijke gebaren te benutten. Omdat alle ad libitum-lagen homogeniseren binnen hetzelfde fundament, namelijk de figuur, bevat het voltooide werk de onvertelde verhalen, drama’s, sentimenten, sereniteit en frustraties die, hoewel ze nauwelijks zichtbaar zijn, het waarachtig vormgeven. Net zoals Piet Mondriaan zich eerst liet inspireren door het landschap en het vervolgens volledig uitkleedde en een raster gebruikte als belangrijkste leidraad, neemt Ziegler de complexiteit van de figuur en brengt deze terug tot de meest rauwe, meest fundamentele en essentiële veredeling van die vorm. Uiteindelijk zijn het de onzekerheid en een soort gok die de brandstof vormen voor de zoektocht die een fundamenteel aspect van de menselijke natuur manifesteert: het verlangen om te blijven verkennen, te streven naar nieuwe doelen en steeds een stap verder te gaan. Een streven dat door Carl Rogers werd samengevat met de woorden: “Het goede leven is een proces, geen staat van zijn. Het is een richting, geen doel.”
