Janet Werner

Janet Werner (b. 1959, Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian painter based in Montreal, Canada. Her artistic practice focuses on the fictional portrait as a medium to explore complex themes of subjectivity and desire. Through her innovative approach, Werner challenges traditional portraiture by transforming anonymous figures from popular culture into vivid, fictionalized personalities. Her paintings investigate the iconic power of imagery, drawing on imagination, memory, and emotional projection to infuse nameless figures with human subjectivity.

In her composite portraits, Werner retains elements of the original, yet introduces themes of transformation, innocence, and loss. This process allows her to evoke a deeper sense of connection with the viewer. Recently, Werner has incorporated collage techniques as the foundation for her paintings, blending contrasting images to emphasize concepts of displacement, rupture, and competing narratives. This dynamic approach highlights the layered complexity of the human experience and invites further reflection on identity and representation.

Her work has been exhibited extensively across Canada, the United States, and Europe. Notable exhibitions include the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Arsenal Contemporary (New York, NY, US), Bradley Ertaskiran (Montreal, Canada), Anat Ebgi (Los Angeles, CA, US), Almine Rech (London, UK), Kasmin Gallery (New York, NY, US), MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA, US), the Art Gallery of Guelph (Canada), Whatiftheworld Gallery (Cape Town, South Africa) and Galerie Julia Garnatz (Cologne, Germany).

A significant survey of Werner's work, titled 'Another Perfect Day', was organized by the Kenderdine Art Gallery and toured five Canadian locations, including Esker Foundation (Calgary, Canada), Doris McCarthy Gallery (Toronto, Canada), and Galerie de l’UQAM (Montreal, Canada). Werner’s artworks are held in prominent public collections, such as the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto, Canada), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Remai Modern (Saskatoon, Canada), and University of Lethbridge Art Gallery (Alberta, Canada), among others.
