Hajime Sorayama

Born in 1947 in Ehime, Japan, Hajime Sorayama lives and works in Tokyo. Widely celebrated for his "Sexy Robot" series, initiated in 1978, he has carved a unique niche in the art world with his distinctive blend of the human form and robotic elements, which contributed to the visual landscape of sci-fi films, a testament to his versatile artistic skills. These pieces, merging the aesthetic allure of the female body with robotic forms, have profoundly influenced the portrayal of robots in various media.

His renowned works, especially those depicting female figures intertwined with robotic and erotic themes, have garnered acclaim both in Japan and internationally.

Sorayama stands as a rare figure in the art community, simultaneously celebrated by prestigious art institutions and sought after by high-fashion houses, erotic publications, and technology corporations.

His contributions to art and technology were recognized in 1999 when he received the Good Design Award (Ministry of Trade and Industry) and the Media Arts Festival Grand Prize (Agency of Cultural Affairs) for his collaboration with Sony on the AIBO entertainment robot's concept design.

His influential works, underscoring his unique fusion of eroticism and futurism in contemporary art, are featured in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.
